  • Officials warn of heightened extremist threat in the United States.
  • The Department of Homeland Security issued an alert.
  • In the coming months they warn events could trigger threats and violence.

The imminent Supreme Court decision on abortion, increased migrant arrivals at the Mexican border, and midterm elections could be possible triggers for extremist violence over the next six months, the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) warned on Tuesday, according to El mañana and the AP.

The United States was already in a “heightened threat environment” and these factors may worsen the situation, the US Department of Homeland Security said in its latest National Terrorism Advisory System bulletin.

“In the coming months, we expect the threat environment to become more dynamic as several high-profile events could be exploited to justify acts of violence against a range of possible targets,” the DHS said.

It is the latest attempt by DHS to draw attention to the threat posed by domestic violent extremism, a far cry from the international terrorism alerts that were a hallmark of the agency after its creation in the wake of the 9/11 attacks.

In fact, threats from abroad are only mentioned in passing in this bulletin. It notes that supporters of the al Qaeda terrorist network celebrated the January clash at a synagogue in Colleyville, Texas. And it mentions that the Islamic State extremist group called on its supporters to carry out attacks in the United States to avenge the killings of the group’s leader and spokesman.

The DHS also warned that China, Russia, Iran and other nations are trying to foment divisions within the United States in order to weaken the country and its standing in the world. In part, they do so by amplifying the conspiracy theories and false reports that are rampant in American society.

However, domestic violent extremists represent the most pressing and potentially violent threat, the agency said. As an example, they cited the attack where a white man killed 10 Black people in a Buffalo, New York supermarket in May.

The bulletin, which will remain in effect until November 30, notes that calls for violence by domestic extremists targeting democratic institutions, candidates and poll workers are likely to increase during the fall. It notes that online forums have praised the mass shooting at Uvalde Elementary School in Texas and encouraged similar attacks. Filed Under: Extremist Threat United States
