Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado, 27, mother of three daughters, was shot to death by an angry driver after a confrontation. The Laredo Police Department (LPD), in Texas, classified the crime as a homicide and a suicide since Rosendo Pérez Zúñiga, 68, committed suicide after killing the young woman.

Young mother Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado was devoted to her three little daughters for whom she was the only support, say those who knew her. The murder of the young woman has caused a deep outrage among the Hispanic community of Laredo, Texas, due to the tragedy of such a violent crime over an insignificant traffic accident.

According to documents consulted by MundoHispánico regarding the case of  Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado’s death in Texas, at 12:40 p.m. on Friday, December 3, several neighbors called the LPD’s emergency number to report a shooting less than a block away from an elementary school.

The first patrol cars from the Laredo Police Department who arrived at the intersection of Rosario Street and Canada Avenue, one block from DD Hachar Elementary School, found a chaotic scene with the young mother Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado already dead after being shot several times.

Officers from the LPD Homicide Division arrived at the crime scene to investigate the crime. The officers discovered that, presumably, the young mother Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado had had a car accident with Rosendo Pérez Zúñiga a few blocks away. The accident was not serious, nor did it cause damage to the vehicles.

At the corner of Rosario Street and Canada Avenue, the two drivers got out of their vehicles, according to some witnesses and expert evidence from officers from the Laredo Police Department’s Homicide Division. However, Rosendo Pérez Zúñiga got out of his car armed with a gun.

Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado got out of her car with the intention of resolving the traffic accident. Overtaken by anger, Rosendo Pérez Zúñiga pointed his gun at the young mother and without a word fired several bullets at her, apparently blaming her for the accident.

After killing Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado, the furious Rosendo Pérez Zúñiga turned the weapon on himself and also shot himself. When the first LPD patrols arrived on the scene at the corner of Rosario Street and Canada Avenue, they could no longer do anything for either of the victims and they were both pronounced dead at the scene.

The absurd tragedy of young mother Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado has left her family and friends in Laredo, Texas in mourning. They are now asking for financial help from the community through a campaign called Funeral Expenses on GoFundMe.

“We are asking our community for help to pay for the funeral expenses of our sister, Dhalia Mauricio, whose life was so abruptly taken on December 3. She left behind 3 small children. She was a dedicated mother, daughter and sister,” explains Kharim M, brother of Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado when asking for help with expenses.

“For those of you who had the pleasure of knowing her, you all know that she always had a smile on her face and brought a smile to others. We are trying to raise enough money to pay for her funeral expenses. Any little help is a great help” proclaims Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado’s brother.

Young mother Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado, in addition to touching the city of Laredo, has also touched the Hispanic community of Houston, Texas, where she had family and spent part of her life. Those who knew her describe her as a young woman with a noble and generous heart who always had words of affection for her friends and family.

The murder of Dhalia Guadalupe Maldonado by Rosendo Pérez Zúñiga is just one more case of gun violence. The non-profit organization National Archive of Gun Violence reports that so far in 2021, 41,550 people have already been shot dead.

As of Sunday, December 5, 2o21, of those people who have been shot dead in the United States, a total of 19,176 were murdered and 22,374 committed suicide. 37,755 people have been injured. The country has already experienced 654 mass shootings, in which at least four people died in the same event.

A detailed reading of the new gun law in Texas reveals that it will no longer even be necessary for a person to have their fingerprints taken when purchasing a pistol or rifle. Only those who are on the list of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) may not obtain or carry a weapon.

It is no longer mandatory for a person to take a gun handling course before purchasing it as it was until Tuesday, August 31, 2021. Now it is only recommended that buyers take a free online course offered by the Texas Department of Public Safety (TxDPS).
