Daniel Cisneros Leyva was arrested and charged in Texas as one of the alleged killers of Edward Guerrero. The Homicide Division of the Houston Police Department (HPD) announced the arrest of 22-year-old Daniel Cisneros Leyva after years of investigation.

Young Daniel Cisneros Leyva faces the charge of capital murder for gunning down Edward Guerrero. The Texas State Penal Code details that the charge of capital murder is the only crime that is punishable with the death penalty for those who are found guilty at trial.

Daniel Cisneros Leyva faces the death penalty

Cisneros Leyva will face criminal proceedings before Judge Martiza Antú of the 482nd Criminal District Court in Harris County. Judge Cantú has not determined when Cisneros Leyva’s first hearing for the death of Edward Guerrero will be.

In addition to Daniel Cisneros Leyva, Cristofer Ernesto Pérez and Juan Castillo, both 20 years old, are also detained as co-defendants in the murder of Edward Guerrero. However, Pérez and Castillo are only accused of a simple murder charge and could receive a sentence of 20 to 99 years in prison.

The shooting alerted the neighbors

The legal documents of the case against Daniel Cisneros Leyva, consulted by MundoHispanico, detail that on Monday, February 18, 2019, 21-year-old Edward Guerrero arrived at The Redford Apartments housing complex, located at 1401 Redford Street, in southeast Houston.

Edward Guerrero was getting out of his car, when three other Hispanic juveniles approached him in another vehicle. Two of them were armed and presumably got out to rob their victim. One of them, later identified as Daniel Cisneros Leyva, was the one who shot Guerrero.

Three young men committed the crime

The sounds of gunshots alerted the residents of the housing complex who came out to see what was happening. That detail was crucial for the HPD Homicide Division to later identify Daniel Cisneros Leyva, Cristofer Ernesto Pérez and Juan Castillo as the alleged attackers.

After hearing the sound of gunshots, other neighbors called the HPD emergency number to report the shooting and that a boy had been injured. Houston Fire Department (HFD) Paramedics were also dispatched to the scene

Edward Guerrero dies after being shot several times

HFD paramedics arrived on scene to assist Edward Guerrero after he was shot multiple times. However, by the time officers arrived on the scene, they could do nothing to help the boy and he was pronounced dead on the parking deck.

After the death of Edward Guerrero was confirmed, the case was taken over by detectives of the HPD Homicide Division who began to investigate the case. Several residents of the apartment complex spoke with the authorities to give details of the crime.

The neighbors offered their testimony

In their testimony, witnesses told HPD Homicide Division agents that Edward Guerrero and another of the new arrivals, now identified as Daniel Cisneros Leyva, had shot at each other until one of them fell, badly wounded.

After the shooting, Daniel Cisneros Leyva and another of the boys who was with him — it is not known for sure which of the two — ran away and got into a sedan that was already waiting for them. The car left the scene at full speed.

Juan Castillo and Cristofer Ernesto Pérez were captured

Based on testimony from multiple witnesses who spoke to authorities and multiple security camera videos from the housing complex where Edward Guerrero was killed, HPD Homicide Division detectives were able to solve the case.

On Tuesday, March 5, 2019, Cristofer Ernesto Pérez and Juan Castillo were captured by HPD detectives. Since then the two have been sleeping in the Harris County Jail, accused of the murder of Edward Guerrero three years ago.

Daniel Cisneros Leyva was a fugitive for three years

After the capture of Cristofer Ernesto Pérez and Juan Castillo, the detectives were able to determine that their accomplice Daniel Cisneros Leyva had been the main person responsible for the shooting death of Edward Guerrero. The motive for the crime is still unclear.

After three years, HPD Homicide Division agents were able to locate and capture Daniel Cisneros Leyva and formally charge him with capital murder in the death of Edward Guerrero. Cisneros Leyva is currently waiting for the date of his first hearing.
