  • It happened in a river in Sacramento, California.
  • The most incredible fishermen story to tell.

You never know what you will find in a day of fishing. And you never know what a fisherman is going to tell you after a day of fishing. But the John Kenyon story goes beyond hype.

Not only did he pull something incredible out of the water, but it was also deadly dangerous. Kenyon is an avid fisherman who went with his father-in-law to enjoy his favorite activity on the Sacramento River in California.

The man thought he had seen it all and knew everything about fishing, as he has been a fishing guide on the Sacramento River for over 15 years… but what happened that day, he could never have imagined.

In his years as a fisherman, Kenyon says he drew everything from lawn chairs to huge award-winning specimens out of the water.

So, that day, he was expectant when they began, with his father-in-law, to lift the fishing net near the mouth of Battle Creek (commonly known as the Barge Hole). They had achieved something, what had to be seen is what it was.

Kenyon told KRCR that nothing could prepare him for what he would pull out of the water on Sunday.

“My father-in-law had the net ready and we raised it to the boat, and it looked like an anchor, so we saved it and put the line, and we raised it directly to the boat and we realized what was happening …”, says the fisherman.

Then they picked up something that wasn’t a lawn chair, and certainly not a fish.

It looked more like a tube threaded with rags. A discarded toy? Part of something?

“That is a bomb! Get everyone to the front of the boat! ”Kenyon yelled.

And it is that, what they had caught, to their horror, was a homemade bomb abandoned in the waters of the river.

But, to greater surprise, the story did not end there.

Kenyon told KRCR that they brought the device to shore and waited for the Tehama County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) to arrive. But as they did so, they heard the voices of another nearby fisherman.

“It’s another bomb!” He yelled.

TCSO said in a press release Monday that, indeed, while officers were on their way to meet with Kenyon, they did receive a separate call for another bomb being pulled from the river.

The Shasta County Bomb Squad later confirmed that both devices were pipe bombs and were destroyed at the scene.

Kenyon believes that with the pumps it could be from other fishermen trying to fish less sportily and faster.

“I think they are probably trying to set off the bombs to knock out the salmon, float and catch them,” Kenyon said. “That’s what I think”.

The Tehama County Sheriff’s Office advises local fishermen to be careful because they don’t know if there are more bombs hidden underwater.

The practice of dropping bombs or explosives to fish is not new.

It is a practice that consists of detonating explosives to stun or kill shoals or groups of fish to make it easier to capture them.

It has nothing to do with sport and is certainly not ecological at all.

This type of fishing, which is generally considered illegal, can be extremely destructive, since it not only destroys the fish that you want to get, but the entire underwater habitat of the place. In addition, it is dangerous for the fishermen themselves, who are exposed to accidents, mutilations or even death from defective devices or miscalculation of detonation.

Homemade pumps are built, commonly using a glass bottle with traces of powdered potassium nitrate and pebbles, or a mixture of ammonium nitrate with kerosene.

Imagine what that does!

When it explodes, the shock waves caused by the underwater explosion cause the fish’s swim bladder to rupture, stunning them.

A small number of fish float to the surface, but most sink to the river, lake or sea bed.
