  • Scientists advance the ‘clock’ of the Apocalypse
  • The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists warns that humanity has never been this close to self-destruction
  • “There are one hundred seconds until the end of the world,” they say

As there was little that 2020 brought us, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists assured in a Press release that there is very little time left for the Apocalypse, for that reason they advanced the Clock of the Last Judgment … and we have 100 seconds of existence left on this clock!

Before you run off to fulfill all your dreams in this short time, let’s understand what this sad reality is about.

We are not talking about probable prophecies or asteroids that will hit us in 100 years, we are talking about a founded entity in 1945 by scientists at the University of Chicago: the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.

They created the so-called Doomsday Clock in 1947 representing the apocalypse as midnight (end of the day) and a countdown to that time depending on how we are treating the planet.

Well, the decision to move (or leave in place) the Doomsday Clock minute hand is made each year by the Bulletin’s Science and Safety Board in consultation with its Board of Sponsors, which includes 13 Nobel laureates.

The watch has become a universally recognized indicator of the world’s vulnerability to catastrophe caused by nuclear weapons, climate change and technologies.

Today they have published that we are closer to the end of the world than we have ever been. In terms of simple symbols for all of us to understand, if the Doomsday Clock were like the one we have at home… we would be 100 seconds from the apocalypse!

And because?

They consider that Humanity continues to face two enormous dangers that are still there and nobody wants to believe: nuclear war and climate change.

And the problem is very serious because world leaders have allowed international politics to counter these threats … to wear off.

In other words, those who should be attentive to this clock, the leaders of the world, are not and do not seem interested enough to do something about it.

These world leaders have annulled or disparaged the nuclear arms control treaties, “creating an environment conducive to a renewed nuclear arms race, the proliferation of nuclear weapons and the lowering of barriers to nuclear war.”

Political conflicts regarding nuclear programs in Iran and North Korea are still there, unresolved, and cooperation between the United States and Russia in arms control and disarmament is almost non-existent, the Bulletin assures.

But the fault of the little time that we have left is not only of the leaders.

We are, as a society, more aware of the climate crisis. It is the young people who will inherit the planet who are protesting the most throughout the world.

But it is of no use as long as the remedies being put forth by governments are cold cloths in the form of wonderful speeches and few concrete plans to limit the carbon dioxide emissions that are altering the Earth’s climate.

Well, apparently, we are seeing the effects of this inaction in the widespread fires in the United States and Australia, for example, or in the faster-than-expected melting of the ice at the Poles that has gifted us with amazing images of huge icebergs to the drift in a warmed ocean.

“Against this background and the willingness of the world’s political leaders to reject the negotiations and institutions that can protect civilization in the long term, the Bulletin of the Board of Science and Safety of Atomic Scientists today approaches the Clock of Judgment. End 20 seconds closer to midnight, closer to the apocalypse than ever.

In doing so, board members explicitly warn leaders and citizens around the world that the international security situation is now more dangerous than ever, even at the height of the Cold War, ”the report says.

To give you an idea, in 2018 the hands on that figured clock were set at 11:58 p.m., two minutes from the end, which is the closest the clock had been to midnight in its 73-year history.

It was also this close, at 120 seconds, in 1953, when Soviet and American thermonuclear weapons were put to the test in the middle of the arms race.

And now, with everything and a pandemic, we are even closer to the real apocalypse … just 100 seconds.
