There, he met with several recognized players within the platform, and little by little thousands of new users were arriving to witness the transmission.

Ocasio-Cortez’s main mission in accepting Twitch’s proposal was to launch a strong message: the voting on November 3 is presented as one of the most important in the history of the United States, and the country requires that each of the citizens registered to vote exercise their right.

Soon, the user count began to increase, and within minutes Ocasio-Cortez was already accompanied by more than 400,000 users.

The overall Twitch count reached a maximum range of 435,000 visitors, which has put the senator in a privileged place, being one of the first to generate a large number of visits despite not having a channel of her own.

Ocasio-Cortez and the struggle for democracy

In addition to stressing the importance of voting in the upcoming presidential elections, Ocasio-Cortez took the opportunity to address each of the 435,000 attendees of the broadcast to touch on important topics.

Among them, one that has caused controversy in recent months: the use of Twitch as a recruiting method for the United States military.

On an issue that has been addressed on previous occasions, Ocasio-Cortez did not miss an opportunity to emphasize why this strategy is inappropriate.

Apparently, recruitment to the US military through Twitch has been going strong in recent months. Some time ago, Twitch made the decision to eliminate a promotion made by the army channel, USArmyEsports, since it was shown that they had violated the terms and conditions of service of the platform.

The way the US military operated was through a series of attractive rewards or incentives.

On your broadcast channel, the United States Army implemented a strategy in which it promised a raffle for a controller for the Xbox Elite Series 2, with an approximate cost of 200 dollars.

To access this award, users were directed to a recruitment format in which the details of the contest or its specific bases were not mentioned.

For his part, a member of the United States Navy told The Navy Times that “This is all part of a much larger picture on the part of the Navy… something that the army tries to do is show that we are accessible. We want to show that the military is accessible to our target audience, which is predominantly young people between the ages of 17 and 24, and that those accessible people do accessible jobs. “

In this regard, Ocasio-Cortez, who had previously harshly criticized the army for this type of strategy, pointed out that “It is incredibly irresponsible on the part of the army and the navy to recruit young people and children who can be influenced through streaming platforms.”

He stressed that “War is not a game”, and that using the platform to invite to exercise the right to vote was not comparable with using it as a recruitment method for the army.

Ocasio-Cortez isn’t the first politician to participate in a live stream on Twitch. Before, characters such as current President Donald Trump and Senator Bernie Sanders had participated.

However, the congresswoman is placed as one of the first politicians to participate with great success within the application.

If the day of the event was a resounding success for Ocasio-Cortez, what has happened in the following days is proof that the strategy has been attractive to the users of the platform.

One day after the broadcast, Ocasio-Cortez’s event has already been seen by almost 5 million people around the world, and its new official channel on Twitch it has already generated significant visitor traffic.

In just a few days, the congresswoman has managed to attract more than 600,000 followers on her official channel, thus surpassing any other politician who has an official channel within Twitch.
