GOOD NEWS. Cities in the US are giving away free cash: Is yours on the list? To continue helping the people most economically affected by the pandemic, several cities in the country have developed Universal Basic Income (UBI) programs for 2022.

There are at least 28 cities in the United States, including Chicago, Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh, that have approved guaranteed income programs for low-income families. In fact, the latest city to join this trend is Austin, Texas.

Austin will be the first major city in Texas to use the state’s surplus tax dollars to send payments to low-income residents to help support their families. The authorities approved monthly checks of $1,000.

The Austin City Council approved $1 million dollars for the Universal Basic Income pilot program through which they will distribute the funds to 85 families at risk of losing their homes for an entire year, according to The Sun.

The plan will now be expanded as Cambridge Mayor Sumbul Siddiqui said the program will now include low-income households.

The city of Cambridge has $22 million dollars from the American Rescue Plan that they will distribute among some 2,300 families affected by the pandemic. So, eligible families who have reported income below 200% of the federal poverty line will receive $500 per month for a year and a half!

In Indiana, they will provide rebates of up to $250 for qualified married couples and $125 for singles. The good news is that help is available to anyone who filed their 2020 taxes before January 3, 2022. Payments will be made automatically and will be issued from May through the end of the summer. Paper checks will begin to be distributed in July or August.

In Delaware they will give refunds of up to $300 dollars for singles and up to $600 for couples. The aid is aimed at some 600,000 residents who filed their 2020 taxes. “The state anticipates sending [the] first round of payments in May based on 2020 return data. Other rounds will follow based on data that can be coordinated with other state agencies,” the Department of Finance told The Sun. Cities in the US are giving away free cash: is yours on the list?
