Washington, May 27 (EFE News).- The civilian Christine Wormuth became the first female secretary of the United States Army this Thursday, after a chaotic vote in which she was confirmed, unconfirmed and confirmed again in the Upper House. Finally, the Senate unanimously confirmed Christine Wormuth as secretary of the Army, after a procedural error that delayed her ratification until this Thursday, when it should have been confirmed last night.

Earlier this week, the Upper House Armed Services Committee gave its approval to the appointment of Christine Wormuth, who is the first woman to access this position, one of the highest ranking for civilians in the US Department of Defense. The Administration of the President Joe Biden has increased the number of women in national security positions: At the Pentagon, Christine Wormuth will join the Deputy Secretary of Defense, Kathleen Hicks, the “number two” of this department, in one of the positions of greater responsibility.

So far Wormuth has served as director of the Center for International Security and Defense Policy at RAND Corp, a federally funded think tank. In the past, she was Undersecretary of Defense for Policy and Senior Director of Defense Policy at the National Security Council during the Barack Obama Administration (2009-2017), of which Biden was Vice President.

During the interim period since Biden won the election last November and his inauguration on January 20, Wormuth led the Democrat’s transition team on defense. The Secretary of the Army is one of the highest positions reserved for civilians in the US Department of Defense and is responsible for all matters affecting this branch of the Armed Forces, such as its personnel, facilities, procurement weapons and equipment, and financial and communication management, among others.

In this role, Wormuth will be responsible for presenting and justifying Army policies, plans, programs, and budgets to the Secretary of Defense and legislative committees. The leadership of this military branch is made up of two civilians – the secretary and the undersecretary of the Army – and two military officers with four stars – the chief and the deputy chief of the Army General Staff.
