Chiquihuite hill collapse: SEARCH
Until the night of September 1, elements of the National Army continued to support the work with the DN III Plan, National Civil Protection and the State of Mexico, the National Guard, all areas of the city council and emergency bodies, as well as specialists from the Urban Search And Rescue of the Mexican Red Cross to locate people.
Raciel Pérez Cruz, mayor of the municipality of Tlalnepantla, conurbation to the Mexican capital and where the hill is located, confirmed to a television channel the number of deaths and disappearances so far. “At this moment it is about stabilizing the disaster area, we need to rescue the missing persons alive and we are in that effort,” he added on the Foro Tv station. TONS OF EARTH IS DISCHARGED
The collapse occurred around 2:30 p.m. (7:30 p.m. GMT), when tons of earth began to detach, leaving three houses buried. As the mayor explained at the scene, two large rocks slid down crushing the houses, so the area remains at risk from possible landslides.
In an official message on social networks, he asked neighbors not to approach the area to let emergency teams work. Dozens of members of rescue groups came to help in the search. Filed Under: Chiquihuite Hill Landslide
“I WANT TO ASK FOR CALM”
“I want to ask the neighbors of this community for calm. We need them to be kept in their homes, we have evacuated the risk area and we need the emergency forces to have the best conditions, so we ask that they stay away from the place, “he requested in a video.
Half an hour after the events, the emergency forces arrived at the scene to begin the search for the missing persons under the rubble and provide medical attention if necessary. Filed Under: Chiquihuite Hill Landslide
OBJECTIVE, THE RESCUE
“We are going to work the hours that are necessary and at this time our priority is to rescue the people who were unfortunately caught at the scene,” said Pérez Cruz in a message shared on the state government’s social networks.
The emergency bodies have asked for silence to listen to any sound that the trapped people could emit, a strategy they used after the earthquake of September 2017. Filed under: Chiquihuite hill collapse
Chiquihuite hill collapse: POSSIBLE CAUSES
According to the mayor, the recent heavy rains could have softened the earth, since dark areas of humidity can be seen in the images shared on social networks and local media.
Recently the neighbors had denounced the situation and even videos circulate on social networks in which the water falls through several waterfalls eroding the land, but no official came to the area. Rainfall is expected in the next few hours, so the search work may have to be stopped.
