The state of Maine has started its tax rebate program that sends $850 per individual and $1,700 to the average family. The program aims to help state residents cope with inflation.

The first round of checks was sent to 5,000 residents last week, after shortages of envelopes and paper products threatened to delay delivery. However, this week Maine is issuing an estimated 200,000 payments to eligible residents, according to The Sun.

Democratic Gov. Janet Mills said her administration will send out the second round of checks this week. Mills said an estimated 200,000 a week will be mailed out so most residents will receive the money by mid-July, the AP reported.

The Maine Legislature approved the rebate program, returning more than half of the $729 million state budget surplus to residents. The Maine Department of Financial and Management Services was initially concerned about a shortage of envelopes, but the Maine State Treasurer’s Office has confirmed that it has a sufficient number of envelopes to mail the checks, Mills’ office said.

The checks will go to Maine residents who work full time and file tax returns with income of less than $100,000 if filing individually or $200,000 if filing jointly. The checks are an outgrowth of a $1.2 billion supplemental budget that Mills signed in April. The state also created a website designed to answer questions about filing taxes and determining eligibility for a relief check.

Eligibility for the Maine check will be based on 2021 tax returns, which are due Oct. 31. The checks come amid a paper shortage that has hit communities across the country and threatens everything from elections to toilet paper.

“The budgets of so many hard-working Maine people have been teetering on the brink of inflation, and while we can’t control inflation or global markets, we can make sure Maine people have what they need to deal with these rising costs,” Mills said.

Mills said the average Maine family will receive $1,700 in aid. Residents who haven’t filed a tax return have until Oct. 31 to file one and still claim a check in Maine. Checks are not available to people who are claimed as dependents on the someone else’s tax return.
