  • The CDC warned that the delta variant can be as contagious as chickenpox.
  • Health authorities are considering changing measures to fight coronavirus.
  • Vaccination is the best defense “against a variant so contagious that it acts, almost, as if it were a new and different virus,” the CDC said.

The new evidence showing that the delta variant is as contagious as chickenpox and may be more dangerous than other variants of the virus has prompted US health officials to consider changing advice on how the nation fights coronavirus, internal documents show.

Recommending face masks for everyone and requiring vaccinations for doctors and other healthcare providers are some of the measures the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are considering, according to internal documents obtained by the Washington Post.

“People need to understand that we are not raising a false alarm,” CDC director Rochelle Walensky told CNN. He added that “this is one of the most contagious viruses known” and is “comparable” to “measles or chickenpox,” reported the Efe agency.

The documents appear to be talking points for CDC staff to use to explain the dangers of the delta variant and the “game-changing” infections that can occur after vaccination. Mentioned in communications: “Acknowledge that the war has changed.”

Recommending that vaccinated people resume wearing masks indoors in virus hotspots, the CDC said this week that new evidence shows breakthrough infections can be just as communicable as those from unvaccinated people. They cited a recent large outbreak among vaccinated people in the Cape Cod town of Provincetown, Massachusetts, among others, for change.

The documents note that the delta variant, first detected in India, causes infections that are more contagious than the common cold, flu, smallpox and the Ebola virus, and is as infectious as the highly contagious chickenpox.

Vaccines are highly effective

The internal documents also cite studies from Canada, Singapore and Scotland showing that the delta variant may pose a higher risk of hospitalization, intensive care treatment and death than the alpha variant, first detected in the UK.

Since January, people who became infected after vaccination account for a growing share of hospitalizations and in-hospital deaths among COVID-19 patients, according to the documents. This trend coincides with the spread of the delta variant. But the CDC emphasizes that COVID-19 vaccines are still highly effective in preventing infection, serious illness and death, and that breakthrough infections are rare.

Biden asks to pay $ 100 to those who miss to get vaccinated against Covid-19

Desperate measures? President Joe Biden is asking state governments to pay $ 100 to those missing to get vaccinated against Covid-19, in an attempt to motivate citizens to apply immunization doses against the virus.

United States has the necessary vaccines for all its residents. However, only slightly more than 49% of citizens have been fully vaccinated, so Biden has asked governors to give $ 100 to those who attend to get vaccinated.

The president intends to reinforce his immunization plan, that is why, just when the cases of the Delta variant increase, he asks state and local governments for a new payment for citizens; but where will this money come from?

Each state received funds from the American Rescue Plan approved in March with the idea that regional leaders could invest in the areas hardest hit by the pandemic in their locality. Now, Biden is proposing to use those funds to get more people vaccinated.

Money from state and local governments

Some states have already used part of the budget to help their community, but the White House reminded them in a statement that “the American Rescue Plan… provided states, territories and localities with resources that can be used to offer incentives to increase the vaccination rates ”.

“The president will call on all states, territories and local governments to use these funds … to provide $ 100 to anyone who gets vaccinated,” they added in the document.

Actions to motivate vaccination

As an example, the White House cites in the text that this type of inventiveness has worked in several states. “States like New Mexico, Ohio and Colorado have piloted $ 100 incentive programs that have also helped move the rate of vaccines,” they say.

But Biden has not only asked local governments for help, he has also asked companies to give their workers time off to go and get vaccinated and even offer incentives, as happened in Kroger when stores offered $ 100 to their employees and thus the rate vaccination went from 50% to 75%, reported the NY Journal.

The Biden administration came up with this idea after about a third of the unvaccinated said that a cash payment would act as an incentive to apply the doses of Pfizer, Moderna or Johnson and Johnson against the coronavirus, according to an investigation by the University of California at Los Angeles.

In addition, the White House indicated in the text that they would take four actions to improve vaccination levels in the country, especially in the southern and central United States where, far from decreasing cases, they have increased considerably.

Among the new actions of President Biden to improve vaccination are: pressuring the federal employees to get vaccinated and ask companies to give their employees time off (paid for by the government) to get vaccinated.

They will also take into account the case of the military, since recent official statistics indicate that 30 to 40% have not been vaccinated. “This is particularly important because our troops serve in places around the world, many where vaccination rates are low and the disease is prevalent,” so they asked the Department of Defense to determine how and when they will administer MANDATORY vaccinations to members of the Army.

Among the measures announced this Thursday, the White House indicated that it will require more than 4 million government workers Americans who prove they are vaccinated against COVID-19 or will have to wear face protection and maintain their physical distance from their co-workers.

In addition, they will have to undergo tests on a regular basis, that is, deliver COVID-19 test results twice a week or weekly, EFE reported.
