California: Marlen Benítez Muñoz is run over when selling fruit

Marlen Benítez Muñoz, a mother

of a family, was intentionally run over when she made a living selling fruit in California.

Benítez Muñoz, 28, was left in a serious coma after being run over in Saint Bernardine, California, when he sold fruit in his business with which he raised his four children.

He San Bernardino Police Department (SBPD) arrested Robert Lee Spargo, 42, for allegedly responsible for the intentional attack to Benítez Muñoz.

The Benítez Muñoz tragedy has caused outrage and fury among the Hispanic community in Southern California who have come together to raise a single voice demanding justice for the young mother.

San Bernardino is a city in southeastern California and east of the Los Angeles metropolitan area.

According to the information of the case against Spargo, consulted by MundoHispánico, on Tuesday, August 13, 2020 at 3:20 in the afternoon, the SBPD received a call to the emergency number reporting an accident.

SBD officers appeared at the intersection of Frontage Road and Highland Avenue in the eastern San Bernardino metropolitan area to treat a woman who had severe injuries.

Due to the severity of his injuries, the agents asked that the victim be transferred to an emergency hospital.

A pair of Good Samaritans detained a white Caucasian man, Spargo, at the crash site, who was trying to escape the crash site by running down the street.

According to the investigation by the authorities, Marlen Benítez Muñoz had arrived early at the corner of the accident to settle in as usual with her small cart of prepared fruits.

Other Hispanic business carts are installed in the area, so it is common for many immigrants to pass through the area to buy food.

Shortly after 3:00 in the afternoon a Chevy Tahoe truck, at full speed, jumped onto the sidewalk on Frontage Road and without slowing down rammed the mother’s cart.

Benítez Muñoz, who did not have time to avoid the blow, was left lying on the floor, shaken by the impact. One more cart from another vendor was also hit by the owner who managed to avoid the impact.

After the impact, the driver of the Chevy Tahoe truck that caused the tragedy got under the car and ran down the street trying to escape.

However, before he got far, two Hispanics who witnessed the incident rushed out and tackled him in the middle of the street so he wouldn’t escape. While the two Good Samaritans were capturing the man, someone called the authorities.

Marlen Benítez Muñoz was transferred to the emergency Loma Linda University Medical Center and where until the moment of writing this story she continues to be hospitalized, in a coma, and with various severe injuries as a result of the beatings.

The San Bernardino County Attorney’s Office charged Robert Lee Spargo on the felony charge of aggravated fatal assault against Benítez Muñoz.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the forensic evidence of the hit to the fruit cart, the testimony of the witnesses and the videos of the security cameras, Spargo intentionally attacked Benítez Muñoz.

Robert Lee Spargo is already detained in the San Bernardino County waiting to face your legal process. The legal documents do not detail when you will have your first hearing.

SBPD detectives continue to investigate the case to determine what was the motive Spargo had to run over the Hispanic woman mother of four daughters. The documents of the case do not contain any statement from the detainee.

In the investigation of the case, the agents noted that inside the Chevy Tahoe truck the SBPD patrols found several empty aerosol cans and believe that Spargo may have been driving under the influence of some drug.

The tragedy that surrounds Marlen Benítez Muñoz, the only financial supporter for her four children, has deeply touched the Hispanic community in California.

A group of Benítez Muñoz’s friends opened an account on the social network Go Fund Me under the name Help Fruit Vendor Injured in Hit and Run (Help for Fruit Seller Injured in Accident) to raise funds to help her with hospital expenses and support her daughters.

“Marlen… is in critical condition and in a coma after being run over. We are also raising funds to support their four children who need help to survive ”, details the clamor of Benítez Muñoz’s friends in a petition signed by Ángel Mendez-Flores.

According to the request for help, the family of Benítez Muñoz believes that the attack against the Hispanic mother was calculated and motivated by a premeditated act of racism. The authorities have not given an official version of the matter since the accident remains under investigation.
