Brutal attack on mosque in Afghanistan
If confirmed, the death toll would be the highest for an attack of this kind since US and NATO forces left Afghanistan in late August and the Taliban seized control of the country amid scandal and outrage. ‘defeat’ for Biden.
The incident occurred at the busy Shiite Mosque of Gozar-e-Sayed Abad during weekly prayer on Fridays. One of the witnesses, Ali Reza, claimed that at the time of the explosion he was praying and that he saw several victims.
Large number of worshipers killed in Afghanistan mosque attack
According to Zabihullah Mujahid, the main spokesman for the Taliban, the Shiite mosque was the target of the attack, which left a “large number” of worshipers dead and injured. Taliban special forces arrived in the area and were investigating what happened, the spokesman added.
The Taliban leadership has been fighting the growing threat from the local Islamic State affiliate, known as Islamic State in Khorasan. ISIS insurgents have stepped up their attacks on their rivals, according to the AP.
Videos show the terrifying result of the attack
Two fatal attacks were recorded in Kabul. ISIS attacks have also targeted religious minorities in the country, according to The Associated Press. Videos distributed on Twitter show the disaster following the attack on the Afghanistan mosque.
Bodies everywhere, debris, and dozens of people clearly affected helping to transport the injured, are some of the things that could be seen in the images and videos released this Friday morning after the events.
Deadly Afghanistan mosque attack not first
Just last October 3, at least five civilians were killed by a bomb blast outside a Kabul mosque on Sunday, a Taliban official revealed. It had been the deadliest attack on the Afghan capital since US forces left in late August.
The bomb targeted the Eidgah Mosque in Kabul, where a memorial service was being held for the mother of Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid, who later tweeted that the attack had killed civilians.
Injured after multiple attacks
Five people were killed, said Qari Saeed Khosti, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry. Emergency NGO, an Italian-funded hospital in Kabul, tweeted that it had received four people injured in the blast, according to The Associated Press.
The area around the mosque was cordoned off by the Taliban who maintained a strong security presence. The explosion highlighted the mounting challenges facing the Taliban within weeks of taking control of Afghanistan.
The Taliban and their challenge to stay safe
During their 20-year insurgency, the Taliban themselves carried out frequent bomb attacks and shootings, but now they must contain rival militiamen using the same methods. The growing security challenges come at a time of economic crisis.
As the Taliban struggle to rule the country without the massive foreign aid given to the US-backed government they toppled. Three suspects were arrested after Sunday’s explosion in Kabul, Taliban spokesman Bilal Karimi was quoted as saying by AP.
Who could be responsible for the attacks?
He said the Taliban fighters were not injured. Mohammad Israil, a Kabul resident, said he heard “a loud sound” and saw people flee. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, according to The Associated Press.
However, since the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in mid-August, attacks by the Islamic State group against them have increased. This has raised the possibility of a broader conflict between the two extremist groups.
They are ‘expanding’
The Islamic State maintains a strong presence in the eastern province of Nangarhar and considers the Taliban an enemy. He has claimed several attacks against them, including several killings in the provincial capital of Jalalabad.
The attacks in Kabul have been unusual so far, but in recent weeks the Islamic State has shown signs that it is expanding its presence further east and closer to the capital, according to information from The Associated Press.
The Taliban and their challenges after taking power
On Friday, Taliban fighters stormed an Islamic State hideout north of Kabul in Parwan province. The raid came after a roadside bomb by the extremist group injured four Taliban fighters in the area.
As of the writing of this note, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the brutal attack. The Taliban leadership has been grappling with a growing threat from the local Islamic State affiliate.
