Video images have been posted on social media around the world, as reported by The Sun, Mirror, Clarion, and Televisa. The images show a group of small boats moving slowly near the cliff at Furnas Lake when a fissure appeared in the rock and a huge chunk fell directly onto at least two of the boats.

Commander Estevo explained that the accident occurred between the towns of Sao José da Barra and Capitolio, from where the boats had sailed. The Minas Gerais state press office told The Associated Press that the fire department had sent divers and helicopters to assist in the rescue.

Lake Furnas, created in 1958 for the installation of a hydroelectric plant, is a popular tourist attraction in the area. It is located about 420 kilometers (260 miles) north of Sao Paulo. Capitolio authorities, state that the town has about 8,400 inhabitants and receives about 5,000 visitors in a weekend and up to 30,000 during vacation periods.

The authorities also said that the landslide could be related to the recent downpours that caused flooding in the state and forced almost 17,000 people to evacuate their homes. The Brazilian Navy, which helped in the rescue, said it would investigate the cause of the accident.
