Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas hailed Border Patrol agents as heroes in the Uvalde, Texas school shooting. He said their response saved lives after Salvador Ramos broke in to the Robb Elementary School with an automatic rifle, killing 19 children and two teachers, according to Fox News.

According to Mayorkas, the response of the Border Patrol saved lives. The attack happened on Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas where several children died at the hands of an 18-year-old who was carrying a pistol and a long gun.

Through a statement, the head of Homeland Security said: “We are grateful for the courageous members of our Border Patrol, many of whom are part of the Uvalde and surrounding communities, who immediately responded to the scene along with local and state law enforcement.”

The official’s statements are due to the fact that it is believed that a member of the Border Patrol Tactical Unit (BORTAC), a specialized unit within the Border Patrol, confronted the shooter and killed him. Filed Under: Alejandro Mayorkas school shooting

And he recounted what happened: “Without hesitation, they put themselves between the shooter and students to end the bloodshed and administer medical aid. Without question, their heroism yesterday saved lives. A Border Patrol Agent was injured in the crossfire yesterday and we know the loss and trauma from this tragedy will continue to impact many other CBP families for a long time to come.”

He also had a message for the families: “No words can come close to comforting the families of those who lost yesterday in Uvalde. We at the Department of Homeland Security are appalled by this callous act of violence.”

“We grieve for the families and loved ones of the children and teachers lost, and with the people of the community of Uvalde. We are hopeful for the full and fast recovery of those who suffered injuries,” Mayorkas said in the face of this terrible tragedy.

The former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Thomas Homan, said the following: “These men and women are America’s heroes. These men and women are working overtime, 24/7, biggest crisis ever seen. But when they were needed, they didn’t hesitate to go to that school and face the gunfire.”
