Biden AMLO meeting. President Joe Biden said Monday that he will treat Mexico as an “equal” because both countries are “stronger” when they work together, by meeting virtually with the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO).

“You are our equals,” Biden said at the beginning of the meeting, which occurred virtually due to the pandemic, with both presidents communicating through screens.

“We see Mexico as an equal, not as someone who is south of our border. You look the same. And what they do in Mexico and how they succeed dramatically impacts what the rest of the hemisphere will look like, ”reported CBS News.

Biden acknowledged that the two countries “have not been perfect neighbors to each other,” but are “stronger” and “more secure” when working together.

For his part, President López Obrador told Biden: “I am very grateful that you are willing for us to maintain good relations. It suits us for the good of our peoples, ”as reported by Noticias Telemundo.

AMLO also expressed that Mexico is close to God and that it is good that it is close to the United States, which was amusing to Biden.

“I am very grateful that you want there to be equality in our relationship, for there to be respect for sovereignty and that is what matters; We have to cooperate for development with independence, with autonomy, ”said López Obrador.

Sitting between a national and a Mexican flag in the Roosevelt room of the White House, Biden said he was “delighted” to talk with López Obrador, the second leader of another country with whom he has met virtually since he came to power in January, after his telematic meeting last week with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, according to the Efe news agency.

Biden recalled that, when he was vice president between 2009 and 2017, he made four visits to Mexico, and got “to know the country and its people a little,” and commented that he has in the Oval Office a bust of the union leader with Mexican roots César Chávez.

One of the journalists who had access at the beginning of the meeting asked Biden if the United States will send vaccines to Mexico, and the president replied: “We are going to talk about that.”

Shortly before, however, White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said at her daily press conference that Biden has no intention of sharing part of the US COVID-19 vaccine supply with Mexico, as requested. López Obrador, because he wants to first guarantee that they are sufficient to immunize all Americans.

Present at the meeting were the Secretaries of State and National Security, Anthony Blinken and Alejandro Mayorkas, respectively; as well as Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, and the president’s adviser for homeland security, Elizabeth Sherwood-Randall.

The US delegation was completed by the coordinator of the southern border in the White House and former US ambassador to Mexico, Roberta Jacobson, and the person in charge of Latin America in the National Security Council, Juan González.
