Democrat Beto O’Rourke confronts Texas Governor Greg Abbott in the middle of a press conference he was give to update the public regarding the shooting that occurred on Tuesday at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. Twenty-one people died in the massacre: 19 children and two teachers.

On Wednesday, Governor Abbott was giving a press conference surrounded by at least a dozen state officials, when former congressman Beto O’Rourke interrupted him and began yelling at him in anger about how he has handled gun control.

«Governor Abbott, if you have any decency, you will immediately withdraw from this weekend’s NRA convention and urge them to hold it anywhere but Texas,» O’Rourke railed in a message posted on social media, but that was not all because he decided to confront him personally.

In the middle of the press conference, when Abbott was speaking about mental health, O’Rourke was heard yelling at him, «What are we doing?» as he approached the stage where Abbott was speaking. The former congressman said Abbott’s response to the tragedy is «totally predictable.»

“This is up to you until you choose to do something,” O’Rourke told Abbott directly, but by then the governor’s staff began yelling at him to back off. “Sir, you’re out of place. Please leave this auditorium,” one staffer asked politely. Others simply yelled at him that he was a «shame» and that he had to «get his ass out of here.»

Indeed, O’Rourke, who is running to unseat the Republican governor, was led out of the room by police officers. Once outside he had the opportunity to offer his statements to journalists, in which he criticized Abbott’s failure to support red flag laws, gun storage laws, and a total ban on AR-15s and AK-47s.

«This 18-year-old, who just turned 18, bought an AR-15 and took it into an elementary school and shot kids in the face and killed them,” O’Rourke said. “Why are we letting this happen in this country? Why is this happening in this state? Year after year, city after city.»

The Democratic candidate for governor of Texas also lamented that «it is never the right time» to discuss and act on gun control. O’Rourke believes that the «majority» in Texas agree with him, pointed out The Sun. «And it’s our time to do the right thing,» he said.

O’Rourke, like many other politicians, continue their fight for gun control in the United States, which they believe is necessary to prevent the frequent mass shootings in the country. “We have the power to change this and we will,” he wrote on Twitter.

On Tuesday, around noon, Salvador Ramos, an 18-year-old resident of Uvalde entered Robb Elementary School with a pistol and possibly a rifle, Governor Abbott himself reported, and opened fire, taking the lives of 19 children and two teachers.
