Bad Food for Your Skin: The 15 Worst Ones

The secret to a glowing complexion doesn’t come in a bottle — just ban bad food for your skin from your diet. Some are obvious but you’ll be amazed by some of the ‘healthy’ items that that are actually bad food for skin. Robynne Chutkan, MD, and integrative gastroenterologist, founder of the Digestive Center for Women and author of Gutbliss: A 10-Day Plan to Ban Bloat, Flush Toxins, and Dump Your Digestive Baggage reveals, «When I work with people on their diet, whether it’s cutting back on dairy, or switching them from a starchier, sugary processed diet, to a more plant-based way of eating, their skin often clears up.» Axe this bad food for your skin from your diet and before you know it, you’ll be naturally radiant!

1. Candy

This one’s a no-brainer. Sugar tastes so good but it’s bad for you in so many ways. It causes your blood sugar to spike which makes your body produce insulin and this can cause general inflammation, interfere with collagen production and even cause acne.

2. Milk

Studies have found that dairy foods may contribute to acne and rosacea. Skim milk is the worst offender and yogurt is the least.

3. Rice Cakes

Who knew that rice cakes could be bad food for your skin? This former diet snack staple actually has a very high glycemic index. When your blood sugar soars, wrinkles follow.

4. Chips

Chips get you in a couple of ways. They’re loaded with refined carbs which cause wrinkles and possibly adult acne. They also tend to be very salty which dehydrates you.

5. Chocolate

This doesn’t include dark chocolate so you can still indulge. However, milk chocolate, or anything with more sugar than pure cocoa, is definitely bad food for skin.

6. Cooked Meat

Meat cooked at high temperatures produces AGEs which are terrible for your skin. You don’t have to go vegetarian but it’s a good idea to limit your meat intake.

7. Alcohol

All you need to do is look in the mirror after one of those nights to see what alcohol does. Among other things, it dehydrates you and leads to wrinkles.

8. Coffee

Coffee isn’t so straight-forward when it comes to your skin. It’s been said to trigger acne and rosace; it’s also a diuretic so it can lead to a dull, dry complexion. On the other hand, a new National Institutes of Health (NIH) – AARP study has found that drinking three or more cups a day could help prevent melanoma.

9. Fried Foods

Fried foods are soaked in oil and, like meat, can contain AGEs.

10. Processed or Packaged Food

It is possible to get high-quality packaged food but read labels carefully! Processed foods contain chemicals which aren’t good for any part of your body.

11. Salt

If puffiness is your problem, salt may be the reason. It causes you to retain water and wake up with those lovely bags under your eyes.

12. Shellfish

Shellfish aren’t bad food for skin for everybody but, just like some people are allergic to them, they can cause breakouts for those who are sensitive to them.

13. Agave

You probably thought of agave as a healthier alternative to sugar but it’s high in fructose which goes straight to your hips in addition to causing wrinkles.

14. Margarine

As a rule, higher-fat foods help prevent wrinkles but margarine is packed with trans-fats, which we now know are terrible for you in many ways, including your complexion.

15. Juice & Soda

Juice has all of the fructose with none of the fiber of whole fruit. Soda either has tons of sugar or artificial sweetener which may cause inflammation.
