Hand sanitizer distributed by Coral Gables company recalled for having ‘toxic’ methanol.

FDA has added to the list of unsafe products a hand sanitizer distributed in Miami by a Coral Gables company after being recalled for sale Thursday.

AJR Trading recalled batch No. 20DF8307 of “Bio aaa Advance Hand Sanitizer” in 480 ml bottles, with an expiration date of April 2022, after the FDA said its tests found methanol.

Methanol, also known as “wood alcohol,” can be toxic if rubbed on the skin, according to the FDA.

The FDA reported that AJR Trading voluntarily recalled 2,004 units of lot 20DF8307 of “Bio aaa Advance Hand Sanitizer” currently in distribution in the US, packaged in 480 ml consumer bottles.

This lot of hand sanitizer has been tested and meets all appropriate specifications and tests.

However, with extreme caution, these units are being recalled due to the possible presence of methanol in other batches of hand sanitizer from the same brand.

“Substantial exposure to methanol could cause nausea, vomiting, headache, blurred vision, permanent blindness, seizures, coma, permanent nervous system damage, or death. Although all people who use these products on their hands may be at risk; young children who accidentally ingest them and adolescents and adults who drink these products as a substitute for alcohol (ethanol) are at increased risk of methanol poisoning, ”warns the FDA.

To date, AJR Trading has received no reports of adverse events related to this recall.

Most of the hand sanitizers on the FDA’s unfit for use list tested positive for methanol or were reportedly manufactured in the same facility as a methanol hand sanitizer.

This is not the first recall or recall of the advanced hand sanitizer “Bio aaa” in 480 ml bottles, manufactured by AAA Cosmetica in Mexico.

AAA recalled 22 batches of the hand sanitizer in July, but they were distributed by the Payless Janitorial Corporation of Fort Lauderdale.

The 480 ml bottles of “Bio aaa” Advanced Hand Sanitizer that were recalled in July were distributed by a different company than the “Bio aaa Advance Hand Sanitizer” recalled this week.

Also manufactured by AAA Cosmetica, on the FDA’s Not for Use list are “QualitaMed Hand Sanitizer” distributed by QualitaMed Corp. of Homestead and “LumiSkin Advance Hand Sanitizer” distributed by Weston SoFlo Urban.
