Atlanta rapper Young Thug was one of 28 people indicted on Monday in Georgia for conspiracy to violate the state’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, also known as RICO, and participating in criminal street gang activity, according to jail records.

The Atlanta rapper, whose name is Jeffrey Lamar Williams, was arrested at his home in Buckhead, a upscale neighborhood near Atlanta. He is being held in the Fulton County Jail, according to The Associated Press.

Why was Young Thug arrested?

The conspiracy charge dates back to 2013 and the gang charges to 2018, jail records say. Young Thug is allegedly one of three founders of Young Slime Life (YSL), “a criminal street gang that began in late 2012” in Atlanta, the indictment says.

YSL is affiliated with the national Bloods gang, according to authorities. The charges include “Preserving, protecting and enhancing the company’s reputation, power and territory through acts of organized criminal activity including murder, assault and threats of violence.”

Are there more rappers involved?

Young Thug’s attorney, Brian Steel, told local media that, “Mr. Williams committed no crime at all” and that he would “fight to the end to clear it up.” Williams will make his first appearance in court on Tuesday, May 10 at 11:30 a.m.

Also indicted on Monday were Atlanta rapper Gunna, whose real name is Sergio Kitchens, and aspiring rapper Christian Eppinger, who was already in jail on charges of shooting an Atlanta police officer six times in February. It was not immediately known if Gunna, who is charged with conspiracy to violate the state’s RICO law, has been arrested.

In April 2021, Young Thug and Gunna posted bail for 30 low-level inmates who were unable to pay the costs themselves. Young Thug’s record label has been called YSL Records or Young Stoner Life Records. The label refers to its artists as part of the “Slime Family”, and a compilation album called Slime Language 2 reached No. 1 on the charts in April 2021.

According to WSBTV reporter Michael Seiden, the charges in the grand jury indictment against the 28 YSL members and associates include — in addition to conspiracy to violate the RICO Act — murder and armed robbery. Young Thug has been accused of renting a 2014 Infiniti Q50 sedan from Hertz that was used during the murder of the rival gang member, Donovan Thomas Jr, in 2015.
