- The biggest and fastest asteroid of the year will speed by next week
- The size of the Golden Gate Bridge, this asteroid will hit Earth in a few more days
- However, it won’t get close enough to cause great concern.
A lot of attention! An asteroid the size of the Golden Gate Bridge will hit Earth in a few more days, although it will not get close enough to cause great concern, according to information from the portal. Huffpost.
It will be the asteroid, called 2001 FO32, the largest and fastest to travel through the space during this year, but it is smaller than the last one that happened about a year ago, although it will be three times closer, according to a NASA statement.
The asteroid will be of great use to scientists
It measures about 1,300 to 2,230 feet wide and is expected to pass through Earth, albeit 1.25 million miles away, on the next 21st of March. The unusually fast rock will travel 77,000 mph (21 miles per second). It is expected to give scientists a good look at a piece of rock that existed at the dawn of the universe.
In an interview with CBS News, Paul Chodas, director of the Center for Near Earth Object Studies, commented that this is the closest approach predicted in 2021 for any moderately large asteroid, where ‘moderately large’ means at least several hundred of meters in size.
The Golden Gate Bridge-sized asteroid that will hit Earth on March 21 can be seen by anyone with an 8-inch or larger telescope, according to information from Earth Sky.
As reported by the ABC portal of Spain, the 2001 FO32 orbital trajectory around the Sun is known with great precision, since it was discovered 20 years ago and has been tracked since then, said Paul Chodas, director of the Center for Near Object Studies to the earth,
2001 FO32 has been designated a “potentially dangerous asteroid” and will pass at approximately 124,000 km per hour, faster than the speed at which most asteroids encounter Earth. Simply mind-blowing.
The reason for this unusual approach is due to its elongated and inclined orbit around the Sun, an orbit that is inclined 39 degrees with respect to the orbital plane of the Earth. This brings the asteroid closer to the Sun than Mercury and twice as far as Mars.
Discovered in March 2001 by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) program in Socorro, New Mexico, the asteroid 2001 FO32, compared to the size of the Golden Gate Bridge and that it will reach Earth in a few more days, had been estimated , based on optical measurements, in about 1 kilometer wide.
The 2001 FO32 appears to be faint when viewed at infrared wavelengths, suggesting that it probably has something smaller. Analysis by Neowise’s team shows that it is between 440 and 680 meters wide.
2001 FO32 will remain the largest asteroid to pass near the planet in 2021. The last remarkably large asteroid approach was 1998 OR2 on April 29 of last year.
