The Harris County Institute of Forensic Medicine  identified the dead woman as 26-year-old Verónica Yolanda Hernández. She was the girlfriend of Arely Razo. According to some witnesses, the two girls had spent the night in a bar.

The legal documents of the case detail that at 2:20 a.m. on Friday, March 25, 2022, the HCSO emergency number received several calls alerting them of a single-car accident in which two women were severely wounded.

When the first HCSO troopers arrived at the scene due to the report at 12500 Telge Road in Northwest Houston, they found a 2018 Chevrolet Cruze with severe damage to the right side. Based on witness testimony, the initial police investigation determined no other cars were involved.

Detectives from the HCSO Vehicular Crimes Division were sent to the scene of the accident to carry out the preliminary investigation of the case. Paramedics were also sent from the Cy-Fair Fire Department (CFFD) to help injured woman.

HCSO agents determined the car was going southbound and was possibly speeding when it hit a curb and driver Arely Razo lost control. The car then went into a grassy area and hit a tree on the right side.

Arely Razo’s car continued on its way after hitting the tree until it stopped several yards ahead of where it had hit the sidewalk. When the CFFD paramedics arrived on the scene they could no longer do anything for Veronica Yolanda Hernandez and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Some witnesses who spoke with detectives from the HCSO Vehicular Crimes Division said that moments before the accident, Arely Razo and her girlfriend Verónica Yolanda Hernández had left one of the bars in the area. Detectives found that Razo had signs of alcohol intoxication.

Arely Razo was transported to a hospital where forensic blood alcohol investigations were carried out and the doctors also treated her for her injuries, including a head wound. After the medical procedure, the woman was charged with intoxication homicide.

On Sunday, March 27, 2022, Arely Razo was released from the Harris County Jail after paying a $30,000 bond. So far, it has not been determined when she will face trial for the death of her girlfriend Verónica Yolanda Hernández.

The Harris County District Attorney wants to know where Arely Razo was drinking alcohol to the point that she was not fit to drive. The venue and the bartenders could also face criminal charges for allowing her to drive away while intoxicated.

In Texas, people who serve alcohol in a restaurant or bar, even at a family or friends gathering at home, are directly responsible for how drunk people are when they leave. There is already precedent in Houston for bartenders and restaurant owners being arrested for overserving alcohol.

According to the non-profit organization Mothers Against Drinking and Driving (MADD), which is made up of people who have lost a family member to a drunk driver, in the United States every day there are 300,000 crashes caused by someone who decided to have a few too many drinks and drive.
