López Obrador had announced for weeks that he would not attend the meeting if the US government did not heed his request to invite all the countries in the region, including Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela. However, he reiterated that the Secretary of Foreign Relations, Ebrard, will attend in his stead.

The Mexican leader stated that he has good relations with his American counterpart, Joe Biden, but said that he was pressured by the Republican party and by leaders of the Cuban community in the US who have a lot of influence in the government. “From my point of view, they are acting with hatred and they don’t want the brotherhood of the peoples, and they are making a selfless and dignified people like the people of Cuba suffer a lot,” he reiterated. “I am very sorry for the situation, a hug to President Biden. I understand his situation, it is a policy that they have applied for decades, but, if they don’t say ‘enough’, they won’t find a way out,” President AMLO said. Despite his absence, he announced that next July he will seek to meet with President Biden to discuss issues such as the integration of America, although he said that the date will be dictated by the US president’s agenda.

“I’m going to visit him (Biden) in July. I’m going to see him at the White House and I want to discuss with him the issue of the integration of all of America, because my approach is that just as the European Community was created and then went to be the European Union, so it is necessary to do it in America,” he insisted. The United States government made the decision not to invite the countries of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua to the Summit of the Americas, Bloomberg reported. The United States made the call after weeks of discussions with governments in Latin America and the Caribbean, including Mexico, according to people familiar with the deliberations, who asked not to be identified because they are not authorized to discuss the matter publicly. The United States has non-governmental representatives from all three countries registered to participate in stakeholder forums.

They also noted that, «The choice of the United States is based on concerns about the lack of democracy and respect for human rights in the three countries.» Honduras will attend the Summit. The Honduran Foreign Minister, Eduardo Enrique Reina, will represent Honduras at the Summit of the Americas to be held from June 6 to 10 in Los Angeles (USA), the Honduran Foreign Ministry reported this Saturday, amid regional controversy over the exclusion of Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela, reported El Universal.
