Health authorities in U.S alert for outbreak of listeria in Hispanic-style cheeses in several states of the country.

This Friday, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an alert for an outbreak of listeria infections in several states in the country. This outbreak would be related to various types of Hispanic-style soft cheeses, such as queso fresco.

As a safety measure and because listeria can cause serious infections, the CDC recommends that you do not eat these types of foods, especially for pregnant women, people with low immunity, or older adults.

FOOD OUTBREAK: Listeria outbreak linked to fresh and soft Hispanic-style cheeses such as queso fresco. If you are pregnant, 65 or older, or have a weakened immune system, please do not eat these types of cheeses until we identify a specific type / brand, ”the CDC wrote in its twitter account.

Alert for listeria outbreak in Hispanic-style cheeses in several states

Currently, the authorities maintain open an investigation because the outbreak has already left seven people hospitalized in four different states in the United States. The patients are in Connecticut, Maryland, New York, and Virginia.

The CDC, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and local officials indicated that fresh and soft Hispanic-style cheeses are likely the source of the outbreak. However, they continue to investigate to determine the specific brand or type of cheese that people are catching on.

“Make sure the fresh, soft Hispanic-style cheeses (like queso fresco) you eat have labels that say: ‘Made with pasteurized milk,'” the CDC recommended.

About listeria and its symptoms

The CDC warned that listeria is a serious disease “known as invasive listeriosis, when the bacteria spread beyond the intestine to other parts of the body.”

“Pregnant people, adults 65 and older, and people with weakened immune systems are at increased risk of serious illness,” they stressed.

In pregnant women, listeria can be fatal. “Pregnant people generally only experience fever, fatigue and muscle aches. However, Listeria infection during pregnancy can cause spontaneous abortion, fetal death, premature delivery or a life-threatening infection of the newborn ”, he stated.

While people who are not pregnant could present symptoms such as: “headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and seizures, as well as fever and muscle aches.” They may also experience: “common symptoms of food poisoning, such as diarrhea and fever.”

“Symptoms of a serious illness generally begin 1 to 4 weeks after eating Listeria-contaminated food, but can begin the same day or up to 70 days later,” the report concluded.
