The board of commissioners voted to determine whether or not it was necessary to require students, staff and visitors to wear face masks when entering schools or using buses. The vote ended five to two to approve the new rule.

Now, the Central Texas school district has issued a face mask mandate effective immediately and defying the order already issued by Governor Greg Abbott.

The outlook in schools is delicate. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from USA (CDC) recently reported that an unvaccinated teacher without a mask caused a large outbreak in a school after it infected students and parents.

It is about the teacher of an elementary school in California, who last May showed up to work not only without having been vaccinated and without wearing a mask, but was also notably ill, the CDC said in its report. The consequences have been regrettable.

Only two staff members at this K-8 elementary school located in Marin County had not been vaccinated. One of them was this teacher, who was working with a group of 24 students too young to even receive any doses of immunization, the CDC reported.

Of the 24 children studying in that classroom, 22 were tested and 12 ended up testing positive for coronavirus, indicates the report from county health officials and experts from the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Davis and the University of California, Santa Cruz, who undertook to study the case.

As was very likely to happen, several parents were also infected by their children who brought the virus home. According to the CDC, four parents became infected in this massive outbreak in the school community that involved the highly contagious delta variant.

Of the four infected adults, three had been vaccinated and one was not. According to the report, the vaccinated parents developed fever, chills, cough, headache and loss of smell. The good news is that no one involved in the outbreak was reported to have required hospitalization.

It would seem logical, but the experts’ research confirmed that most of the students who were sitting at the front of the class ended up infected with the virus, while few of those who were seated at the end were infected.

The teacher began to present nasal congestion and fatigue from May 19, but assumed it was due to his allergies. Subsequently, he began to cough, have headaches, and experience a fever. Even so, on one occasion the teacher removed the mask to read aloud to the children, even against the rules, the report indicates.

Positive for Covid-19

Despite the symptoms, the teacher continued to attend classes until May 21, when he decided to clear up his doubts. Two days later, on May 23, he informed the institution that he had tested positive for Covid-19 and that it would take a week in isolation.

Unfortunately, it was too late for the little ones, who also began to show symptoms of the disease from May 22, The Associated Press reported.

CDC warns about the importance of vaccination

By releasing this report, the CDC intends to promote vaccination just as children return to face-to-face classes. “This COVID-19 outbreak that originated with an unvaccinated teacher highlights the importance of vaccinating school staff members who are in close indoor contact with children ineligible for vaccination,” the text reads.

“The attack rate of the outbreak highlights the increased transmissibility of the delta variant and the potential for rapid spread, especially in unvaccinated populations, such as schoolchildren too young for vaccination,” they explain.

Outbreak of 27 people in the school community

Investigators determined that 27 people in total had been infected in this outbreak. That includes: the teacher, 12 of his students, the four parents and other students from the same school. The report explains that four of these young people had siblings in the class of the infected teacher, so it is possible that they have been infected at home.

The final analysis indicates that all student infections “were probably part of the same outbreak”, although it is not clear how the other six students were infected, since they are in different grades and the school has been complying with the distance and ventilation measure of the spaces.
