  • If people got part-time jobs, they were eligible for a $1,000 stimulus check.

Americans in certain US states who returned to their jobs received an extra stimulus check of up to $2,000, the New York Post reported on Monday, December 6.

The governors of Arizona and Kentucky were among the legislators who launched the initiative months before federal unemployment assistance payments ended on September 6. Republican Doug Ducey of Arizona proposed the Return to Work Plan in May.

Americans who got full-time jobs would receive a single extra stimulus check of $2,000, while a payment of $1,000 is given to people who got part-time jobs, the New York Post said.

Gov. Doug Ducey wanted to get the largest number of Americans in the state back into the workforce before Labor Day, September 6, KOLD 13 reported. Introducing the plan, he said, “With ample supplies of the COVID-19 vaccine on hand and millions of Arizonans vaccinated, people are feeling safer and are finally coming back to life in Arizona as we knew and loved it before.”

He added, “People are back in the office, restaurants are at full capacity, and tourists are flocking to our state.” Arizona ended its participation in the federal pandemic unemployment compensation plan on July 10, a program whereby unemployed Americans received weekly benefits of up to $300.

Doug Ducey said, “We are going to use federal money to encourage people to work instead of paying people not to work.” The Post’s report indicated that return-to-work incentives were also announced in Kentucky, Maine and Montana.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear revealed in June that up to 15,000 state residents would receive a $1,500 bonus if they returned to work. He said, “We want all Kentucky residents to work and participate as we emerge from this pandemic with our booming economy.”

“We wanted the right solution—not a red state or blue state solution—to thread this needle right and energize our thriving economy, while caring for those still trying to emerge from this once-in-a-lifetime pandemic and desperately in need of help. This is a step in the right direction for our people, our economy, and our employers,” said Andy Beshear.

Residents had to have been employed between June 24 and July 30 if they wanted to claim the extra stimulus check money. Additionally, Maine Gov. Janet Mills offered employers a $1,500 payment for workers who start work June 15–30 or a $1,000 check for Americans returning to work in July. The governor predicted that the money could reach 7,500 people who live in the state.

The program was open to Americans who received unemployment benefits through May 29, accepted a full-time or part-time job that paid less than $25 an hour, and had to remain employed for at least eight weeks, The Post explained.

Many states, including Idaho, Illinois, Florida, and Kansas, chose not to introduce a return-to-work incentive after the unemployment assistance program ended, according to Zip Recruiter.

Meanwhile, Californians and New Yorkers are among those expected to receive some extra money. About two-thirds of California residents have the right to claim a check for $600 as part of Governor Gavin Newsom’s Golden State stimulus program.

Some Americans will receive a payment of $500 or $1,100. Californians making less than $75,000 are eligible to claim a stimulus check. Taxpayers must also have a valid Social Security number to claim the money and must not have received the first payment, National Interest reported.

Americans who did not receive the first stimulus check from the Golden State and claimed at least one dependent are also entitled to a check in the amount of $1,100, according to CNET.

Will there be a fourth federal check?

Meanwhile, local New York City artists could receive a $5,000 grant in October, CBS reported. On the other hand, at this time, a fourth federal stimulus payment seems unlikely, but about 3 million people have signed a petition calling for recurring checks worth up to $2,000 to be sent.

The Change.org petition, launched last year by restaurant owner Stephanie Bonin, has surpassed 2.9 million signatures. She wrote on the petition: “Our country continues to have difficulties. The recovery has not reached many Americans: the true unemployment rate for low-wage workers is estimated at more than 20 percent, and many people faced large debts last year for things like utilities, rent, and child care.”

Stephanie Bonin added, “To move forward, Congress has to make recurring checks automatic if certain triggers are met. No more waiting for our government to send the help we need.”

Also, some families will receive the next payment of their child tax credit. Checks for up to $300 per child were sent to millions of households on October 15. Families will receive up to $1,800 per child before the end of the year, while the remaining amount can be claimed income taxes are filed in April. Some families will be able to receive a slightly higher advance payment if they filed their tax returns late, the Post explained.

Emergency food stamp benefits extended through December in Texas

Emergency food benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance program (SNAP), traditionally known as food stamps, have been extended until the end of December in Texas, authorities reported this week.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission will provide approximately $308 million in emergency food stamp benefits. More than 1.5 million SNAP member households will see the additional amount on their Lone Star Card by December 31, Fox 7 reported.

According to reports, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission received federal approval from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to extend the maximum allowable amount of food stamp benefits to beneficiaries according to family size. Also, all SNAP households will receive a minimum of $95 in emergency allowances.

December’s emergency appropriations are in addition to the more than $5.1 billion in benefits previously provided to Texans since April 2020. Fox 7 explained that, administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission, SNAP is a federal program that provides food assistance to eligible low-income families and individuals in that state. Texans in need can apply for benefits, including SNAP and Medicaid, via the Your Texas Benefits website or by using the Your Texas Benefits mobile app.
