Loyalty is one of the most important elements of any relationship. According to the Oxford Dictionaries loyalty is “Giving or showing firm and constant support or allegiance to a person or institution.” You need loyalty in romantic relationships as well as friendships. You should be loyal to your country and religious or spiritual beliefs. There’s professional loyalty; loyalty to your favorite teams, movie stars, musicians, even brand loyalty. And you must always be loyal to yourself. This year, vow be more loyal and you’ll build lasting relationships. It’s not as hard as you may think! Here are 10 easy ways to up your loyalty quotient.

1. Be Honest

You can’t have loyalty in relationships without honesty. When you trust someone enough to be completely open, you’ll earn their trust too. And that’s the foundation of loyalty!

2. Be Faithful

This goes hand-in-hand with honesty. It’s not just about sex — be emotionally faithful to your close relationships. Don’t gossip, don’t say things behind people’s backs and don’t share private info about your nearest and dearest.

3. Follow the Same Rules at Work

Don’t go over your supervisor’s head unless you absolutely have to. Don’t indulge in water cooler gossip about your boss or coworkers and try to say only positive things about the company you work for. The last one can be a toughie at times but it never hurts to try!

4. Follow Girl Code or Bro Code

Sometimes the heart wants what it wants but crossing that line is a betrayal and it’s hard to go back.

5. Take One for the Team

We’ve all been there. Sometimes you’ve got to suck it up and do something you don’t particularly enjoy for the good of the group. The key here is the good of the group — not to be confused with peer pressure.

6. Speak Up

Don’t just sit silently if you hear others saying nasty things about your friend, boyfriend, spouse or anyone close to you. Speak up in their defense — especially if they’re not around to defend themselves.

7. Stick to Your Principals
